Developing your Sustainability Road Map

 

                                                           THE ROAD MAP IN PRACTICE

Review of company vision and mission

The first step to developing your SDG sustainability plan is to review and understand the company vision and mission statement. In addition, defining and making known the company’s PURPOSE with a PURPOSE statement. This will be followed by an overview of current strategies contributing to the company vision and mission.


Materiality assessment

A materiality assessment consists of identifying the key sustainability factors are the important to the company and the company values.  Employees, internal & external stakeholders and shareholders are part of this important process. Key sustainability themes will be defined through this process.


Understanding the SDGs

There are 17 SDGs and 169 targets. Each of the SDGs has their own goal, targets and indicators. Each of these will be explained in detail and the team will have the opportunity to start thinking about which SDGs relate to them and the company and why these SDGs are important for the company.


Understanding the SDGs with CSR

A practical approach is required to identify how SDGs relate to the company’s CSR programs. The distinction between SDGs and CSR will be discussed with a discussion on how they are inter-connected and inter-related.


SDG assessment and relevance to the company

In a workshop setting, there will be a team survey where senior management will rate and qualify which of the SDGs are most relevant to their respective functional business units.


Sustainability themes & SDG selections

Results from the survey will be discussed with the team through a consensus and collaborative process, S, and the selected SDGs will be approved. There will be followed by a discussion on the targets of the SDGs selected.


Mapping the SDGs to company value chain

Each of the SDGs will be mapped against each of the business units to identify where positive impacts can be achieved and where negative impacts can be minimized.


Setting goals/targets and indicators

For each of the SDGs selected, specific goal/targets statements will be developed. In addition, the team will start the process of identifying clear indicators and metrics for each of the SDGs.


Integrating the SDGs into the company

Developing an integration strategy and plan on how best to communicate the strategic importance and potential impacts of the SDGs with all employees, stakeholders and shareholders will be crucial for success.


Reporting

Different forms of SDG impact reporting styles and templates will be discussed based on local and international best practices. Corporate and proxy sustainability disclosures are becoming a must for many companies.

Professional Consulting

Nitesh has over 25 years of public & private sector project experience in (a) strategy orientation and Implementation, (b) program/project facilitation and management (c) scenario planning with risk management and (d) conflict resolution.

Nitesh has worked and lived in South Africa, China and the US, and consulted to Fortune 500 companies, mid-sized companies and helped a few start-ups get off the ground.

Nitesh has a wide range of expertise and experience in sustainability and developmental issues. SDG 6 (Water and Sanitation) are one of his passions and he has managed water and wastewater projects.

Nitesh is a board member of Water Reuse Association (CA Chapter), member of AWWA and The Water Research Foundation.

CONFLICT MANAGEMENT WITH DIPLOMACY

Conflict Assessment

Understanding and assessing the nature of the conflict and/or dispute using diplomacy is the first step to resolving it. A variety of factors may have contributed to “misunderstanding” and/or “real conflicts”. They can range from environmental and social to political and legal. We ask critical questions to make sure we understand the context, people and issues related to the conflict

Facilitation

Facilitation we believe makes the process of conflict management easier. Think of facilitators as holistic physicians. We encourage people to call us in before any conflict has crystallized, to help avoid the conflict and have people work collaboratively toward their common goal. That doesn't mean there isn't the potential for conflict, or that pockets of conflict haven't already erupted. We will guide our clients through this process using diplomatic skills

Mediation

Mediation usually occurs in order to resolve a dispute or conflict. Generally, the process is of robust negotiation and achieving mutual consensus among the concerned parties. Here again, we will guide our clients through a diplomacy process to achieve mutual beneficial compromises.

DEVELOPED PRODUCT COMMERCIALIZATION STRATEGY FOR DISTILLATION AND RO EQUIPMENT

We helped this client define a commercialization strategy while the distillation product was in it's development stage. In addition, we completed a benchmarking/competitor analysis. The final part of the assignment was a"GoTo Market" orientation analysis for the client.

BUILT STRATEGIC OEM PARTNERSHIPS FOR BRACKISH AND SEA-WATER DECENTRALISED/DISTRIBUTED RO SYSTEMS FOR A NEWCO

We helped this client develop a RO and water reuse strategy that included identification of multiple OEM's for strategic partnerships. We also initiated a cloud based IOT and API continuous monitoring platform with a technology firm for the decentralised/distributed systems with the targeted OEM. The project culminated in a website for the NewCo and the development of a business plan.

DEVELOPMENT OF A UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL (SDG) ROAD MAP FOR GLOBAL COMPANY

As part of our ESG and SDGs sustainability services we assisted this global company in developing a sustainability plan in line with the UN SDGs. The plan and process included aligning the company's strategy with specific SDGs and guided our client in setting their SDG specific key performance areas and key performance indicators.

PROJECT MANAGED WATER REUSE PILOT WITH A LOCAL UTILITY IN SILICON VALLEY TO TREAT FINAL AFFLUENT WITH PRE-TREATMENT AND RO SYSTEM

This project is a great example of a pilot testing program for non-potable reuse that is growing in the US and other parts of the world. Three phases to the project (1) chemical testing (2) open platform MF/UF testing and (3) RO concentrate toxicity testing. The results of the pilot testing program assisted the local utility in the building of their own 1.25 mgd plant.
